Wonder Wall: Wall & Water Opens

    Bookmark and Share

    new york | wonder wall.

    contributed by fabiana santana

if you're one to say you have no reason to go down to wall street, bite your tongue. wall & water, located in the andaz hotel, is now open.

the fidi's most precious boutique hotel the andaz (where guests check in via a handheld PC in the lounge), is bringing some good eats to hungry suits. wall & water offers a farm to table, hudson valley-inspired menu by chef maximo lopez may created in plain view of diners. guests enter the resto through the kitchen (goodfellas style) and wind up in another area where chefs prepare a variety of charcuterie, cheeses and starters like spiced lamb sausage and endive and beet leaf salad. the rockwell group-designed dining room is quiet and cozy, with dark green banquettes pushed against wooden tables, and a ceiling dotted with light bulbs strategically placed to match the room's wall design. (additional light is shed on the room from the pearl shaped sconces, created to honor nearby pearl street.) feeling hungry yet? hunker down with comfort eats like braised veal cheek with black cabbage and sautéed celeriac, duck breast with rainbow chard and turnips, and organic baby veggie pie stuffed with winter herbs and chickpeas.

a spot like this? you never really had a doubt. wall & water. andaz wall street hotel. 75 wall street. at water. 212.590.1234. now open. www.andaz.com

new york | september restos, part two.

thirty days hath september and there are almost as many new restos popping up in the city this month. there's still more than enough time to cheese it up, drink new wine, snack on fries and enjoy high tea.

    so cheesy.

it was only a matter of time before soho hot spot delicatessen branched out. the mac ('n cheese) at macbar comes in versions like the mac reuben, made with braised corned beef and pickled sauerkraut with swiss; the mac stroganoff, made with a hearty helping of braised beef, stewed mushrooms and sour cream sauce; and the mac quack, a luscious mac and cheese dish made with duck confit, fontina, caramelized onion and herbs. now open. 54 prince street. at lafayette. 212.226.8877. www.macbar.net

    salt to taste.

caroline fidanza (diner, marlow & sons) is the force behind saltie, a cash café in williamsburg. chef fidanza is partnering with baker elizabeth schula and chef rebecca collerton (egg) on a menu featuring quick-serve foods like sandwiches, pastries, homemade ice cream and coffee from crop to cup and fresh fruit sodas. now open . 378 metropolitan avenue. at havemeyer. williamsburg. 718.387.4777.

    crosby show.

giant glass windows and metal sculptures decorate the lobby of the crosby street hotel. but your focus will be on the hotel's dining den, the crosby bar. featuring a long pewter bar manned by marshall altier (fatty crab, insieme, tailor), the spot will not only serve drinks, but all three meals and an afternoon tea, too. choose to have your cuppa inside or out in the leafy courtyard garden. opens late september. 79 crosby street. at prince. 212.226.6400. www.crosbystreethotel.com

    rebirth.

if you were a fan of soho's now shuttered cendrillon (pictured), make your way to BK to indulge in the filipino pan asian fare once more at purple yam. owners romy dorotan and amy besa have transplanted the resto to ditmas park. reclaimed wood floors are flanked by handmade booths and benches, and the room also boasts tall windows and a bamboo-covered backyard. and while the menu does brings back some of cendrillion's sig dishes, new ones like avocado and mushroom quiche, korean tofu soup and soju-based cocktails remind you to look to the new. opens late september. 1314 cortelyou road. between rugby and argyle. ditmas park. 718.940.8188. www.cendrillon.com

    wine mixer.

old and new play nicely at ardesia , hell's kitchen's newest wine bar located on the ground floor of a new residential building. a mix of new and classic wines make up the vino list, and there's an emphasis on region highlights. and to complement the pours? a bar menu of cheeses and charcuterie is also avail. opens late september. 510 west 52nd street. between 10th and 11th. 212.247.9191. www.ardesia-ny.com

    prêt-a-boire.

"ready to drink" is the motto at bar henry, and with a 100 bottle menu, that should be pretty easy to deliver. the list was developed by john slover (blue hill, cru) and is bookmarked with an ameri classics menu including roast chicken and steak. brass and copper emphasize the old world theme, as does the black-and-white marble floor and neon signage. now open. 90 west houston street. between thompson and laguardia place. no phone yet.

    little star.

fresh on the summer opening of his resto piccola cucina, chef philip guardione is already opening a spinoff. this time, foccacia is the focus for guardione at piccola cucina focacceria. tradish two-layer, thin crust focaccia di recco (a type of focaccia unique to the italian town of recca) is filled with italian crescenza cheese along with items like pesto, prosciutto and gorgonzola. want something sweet? save room for tiramisu and nutella crepes. opens late september. 120 macdougal street. at minetta. no phone yet.

    New Opening: A Voce

    september 10, 2009

    new york | be heard.

thomas, masa, michael, rande. you boys of the time warner center better mind your manners; there's a lady present. a voce is moving in and missy robbins is in charge.

it was only a matter of time before the beloved gramercy resto found its way uptown. a voce's second outpost, this one located in the former café gray space, is designed by david rockwell and features not only inspiring central park views, but an amazing antipasti bar. want a tease? meats (including a spreadable and spicy salami called nduja), imported cheeses and items like home made salt cod, pickled baby fennel and tuna prosciutto with olive oil are some of the plates prepared here. order some of these starters before diving into robbins' italian-centric menu including dishes of figs with pressed pork belly, crab and sea urchin spaghetti, branzino with heirloom tomatoes and umbrian lentils with lamb sausage.

the rooms, covered in hues of contrasting ivory, chocolate and warm walnut wood, are separated by large glass walls lined with more than 8,000 bottles from the restaurant's vast collection. a slightly elevated lounge features a regal wood bar accented with brown leather and marble flooring where modern takes on classic cocktails are perfected. try a "new fashioned" made with bulliet, concord grape juice, orange bitters and brandied cherries.

    New Opening: Sweet Afton

    september 03, 2009

    new york | flow gently.

to robert burns, sweet afton was how he described the afton water in ayrshire, scotland. for you, it's a reason to head to queens.

the brothers behind west village pub wilfie & nell have expanded their family business all the way to queens with the opening of sweet afton. expect the same laid-back vibe here as its manhattan sib, but with plenty exposed brick, reclaimed wood and library brown leather banquettes. but if you like it light? head to the back garden or open the front windows to let the sun shine down for al fresco options. but here, it's more than the booze. enjoy eats from PJ calapa (nobu 57) made from locally sourced ingreds like meat from pat la frieda and butchers block, cheese from murray's and pickles from bob mcclure in brooklyn. even the bread is local, from rollo mio in maspeth. expect irish sausage rolls, beer battered fried pickles and irish cheddar-topped burgers. and when things get rowdy? indulge in a selection of 10 rotating draft picks, dirty martinis made with pickle juice in lieu of olive brine, and sweet tea infused with vodka and honey ginger syrup.

can you feel me flow? sweet afton. 30-09 34th street. at 30th. astoria. 718.777.2570. now open. www.sweetaftonbar.com
